Burek

Burek

Burek is one of the traditional Bosnian savoury dish. It's made with filo pastry and filled with mince meat. Bosnians can't have a proper meal without this pie.

Ingredients
2 cups of flour
1/2 cup warm water
1/4 cup sunflower oil
1 tsp salt
Meat filling
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
3 onion minced
salt and pepper(to season)
1/2 cup sunflower oil

Method:

  1. In a large bowl, with wooden spoon mix together the flour, warm water, oil and salt until it comes together in a doughy mass
  2. Add more water, a tablespoon at a time, as needed to bring the Ingredients together
  3. Remove the dough to a floured work surface and kneed until smooth and pliable
  4. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside to rest at least 30 minutes
  5. Preheat oven to 375 F
  6. Mix together the ground beef, onion, salt and pepper in a large bowl until smooth and set aside
  7. Remove the rested dough to a lightly floured work surface and roll out into a large rectangle
  8. Place floured fists underneath the dough and gently pull sections of the dough out to form a very thin rectangle about 60cm by 90cm (Take care not to tear holes in the dough)
  9. Brush the pastry dough all over with oil
  10. Place the row of the meat filling along the longer edge of the rolled out pastry dough, leaving a 1-inch border
  11. Bring the bottom of the pastry up over the meat filling and roll it up into a long sausage-shaped roll
  12. Wrap the pastry roll around it self to form a snail-shaped pie and put it in the trey
  13. Brush the top of the pastry with the oil
  14. Place in the oven and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until cooked through and golden brown
  15. Serve with yogurt or salad
